Body-Mind Centering® - Embodying the Skeletal System with Sebastian Bechinger and Melody Shantala Sacco

May 17th & June 7th 6.30-9pm; June 15th 10.30-4.30

Body-Mind Centering® is an encompassing and embodied approach to movement, experiential anatomy, embryology and human development.

These classes are focussed on the skeletal system. Composed of bones and joints, the skeleton creates a living and dynamic structure of support within the body, giving form, protection and carrying us through space in relationship to gravity. Embodying bone supports the quality of effortless clarity.

Facilitators Melody Shantala Sacco and Sebastian Bechinger are Somatic Movement Educators in Body-Mind Centering®. Melody also holds a Diploma in Community Dance (Trinity Laban) and Sebastian holds a BA in Choreography (Dartington College of Arts).

Location: Tanz*Hotel, Zirkusgasse 35, 1020 Vienna

Costs: Friday classes - by donation; Saturday class €30-40

Body-Mind Centering® groups

In these classes we focus on specific BMC® material including embodied anatomy, developmental movement, embryology and somatic psychology.

These classes are enquiry-based and process-based. Together we dive into the depths of the body-mind process and see what insights, feelings, imagery and expressive qualities arise.

We also address functional movement alignment and embodied wellbeing.

These classes are open to all but are especially suited to individuals who have an existing interest in dance, movement, bodywork, psychology or therapy.

Embodied Functional Movement

Based on BMC material stripped back to the basics. These classes focus on the need-to-know stuff for healthy structural alignment and coordination.

These classes are well suited to individuals new to somatic practices, are recovering from illness or injury or who have specific performance goals in relation to movement - dance, athletics, yoga, pilates, martial arts etc.

We place a strong emphasis on the breath, dynamic alignment of the spine, connecting the periphery of the body to the centre and mobilising and stabilising the joints - particularly hips, shoulders, lower back, and the neck.

These classes flow in a dynamic progression from mat-work on the floor to standing and walking, covering the major bases of healthy movement and alignment.

Creative Dance and Movement

These classes are more about exploration and self- discovery than copying routines and prescribed steps - focusing on body awareness, creative expression and the joy of movement.

These classes are designed to be fun and engaging, whilst challenging participants to be aware of themselves, their bodies and their social and physical environment.

Each class involves warm ups, simple exercises to centre and ground awareness into the body and to encourage functional movement and neurological integration (based on Bartinieff Fundamentals), as well as guided movement explorations and creative, choreographic play.

Depending on age group and populations the sessions are adapted to be most relevant to the developmental needs of the participants, helping them gain mastery of themselves and their expressive capabilities.

These classes are inspired, to a large degree, by Laban Movement Studies and can be adapted for professional performers - actors, dancers, musicians - and other artists to support and enhance their creative practice and performance.
